Kimberley Stafford: We've been around for over 20 years, adding real estate and private markets 15 years ago after the global financial crisis. We also have invested heavily in our platform. Today, we have over 130 private markets professionals. We've deployed over $175 billion across over 30 collateral types over the last ten years.

We've built our business through the lens of one of the leading global fixed-income managers. So what does this mean? We have a strong focus on top down macro insights, which we think is really important across markets. We take a deep relative value investment orientation where we're very discerning about where we find risk and put it in portfolios, and then a very strong view on both risk and capacity management.

We also take a long-term view as a lender versus a transactional mindset, which we think is much more aligned to investor outcomes. We also think that coming at this from the broad vantage point of both public and private markets is a key differentiator for our platform. This allows us to access opportunities across the liquidity spectrum and across the capital structure, so we're seeing many more opportunities and we can place them in the right liquidity and vehicle structures to meet specific client objectives. Also the things that have been tried and true on the public side, we've implemented in our privates business as well. And that's a focus on data, on scenario analysis, on portfolio implementation and analytics.

Our ability to be agile and flexible and to go where we see alpha opportunities is a critical point and we'll make continued investments in these spaces.

Text on screen: Jason Mandinach, Head, Alternative Credit and Private Strategies

Jason Mandinach: We want to continue to build upon our leadership position in asset-based lending. But there's a collision here of a massive market opportunity created by everything we're seeing from the regional banks and just higher rates in general putting a lot of pressure on non-bank platforms with a growing client need that we continue to hear is private credit allocations are becoming larger, they're becoming more structural but they're not all that diversified.

The second focus is being prepared for what we think is going to be some of the most attractive vintages from an opportunistic standpoint. We think we are really well prepared in that real estate and corporate credit are where we feel there's been the greatest complacency over the last decade, where there's been the greatest buildup of leverage, and where there's going to be a lot of challenges among capital structures and stranded assets. At the same time, these are the two areas of the market that we've had a tremendous amount of discipline in our growth over the last decade.

DISCLOSURE

All investments contain risk. Alternative investments involve a high degree of risk and can be illiquid due to restrictions on transfer and lack of a secondary trading market. They can be highly leveraged, speculative and volatile, and an investor could lose all or a substantial amount of an investment. Alternative investments may lack transparency as to share price, valuation and portfolio holdings. Complex tax structures often result in delayed tax reporting. Compared to mutual funds, private funds are subject to less regulation and often charge higher fees. Alternative investment managers typically exercise broad investment discretion and may apply similar strategies across multiple investment vehicles, resulting in less diversification. Trading may occur outside the United States which may pose greater risks than trading on U.S. exchanges and in U.S. markets. Investing in the bond market is subject to certain risks including market, interest-rate, issuer, credit, and inflation risk. Investments in residential/commercial mortgage loans and commercial real estate debt are subject to risks that include prepayment, delinquency, foreclosure, risks of loss, servicing risks and adverse regulatory developments, which risks may be heightened in the case of non-performing loans. Investments in mortgage and asset-backed securities are highly complex instruments that may be sensitive to changes in interest rates and subject to early repayment risk. References to Agency and non-agency mortgage-backed securities refer to mortgages issued in the United States. Structured products such as collateralized debt obligations are also highly complex instruments, typically involving a high degree of risk; use of these instruments may involve derivative instruments that could lose more than the principal amount invested. Investing in foreign-denominated and/or -domiciled securities may involve heightened risk due to currency fluctuations, and economic and political risks, which may be enhanced in emerging markets. Private credit involves an investment in non-publically traded securities which are subject to illiquidity risk. Portfolios that invest in private credit may be leveraged and may engage in speculative investment practices that increase the risk of investment loss. Investments in Private Credit may also be subject to real estate-related risks, which include new regulatory or legislative developments, the attractiveness and location of properties, the financial condition of tenants, potential liability under environmental and other laws, as well as natural disasters and other factors beyond a manager’s control. Equity investments may decline in value due to both real and perceived general market, economic and industry conditions, while debt investments are subject to credit, interest rate and other risks. Diversification does not ensure against loss.
