Team Leadership

PIMCO is proud to have an exceptional team of quant equity research analysts, led by Dr. Usman Ali, who has over a decade of experience in systematic equity portfolio construction and management. He completed his Ph.D. in Economics at Yale University, studying under Robert Shiller, the 2013 Nobel Prize winner in Economic Sciences and a pioneer in behavioural finance. Dr. Ali has received numerous accolades for his research.

AQR Insight Award 2018 honourable mention was awarded to Usman Ali and David Hirshleifer for their paper, “Opportunism as a Firm and Managerial Trait: Predicting Insider Trading Profits and Misconduct”. AQR Insight Award 2019 second prize was awarded to Usman Ali and David Hirshleifer for their paper, “Shared Analyst Coverage: Unifying Momentum Spillover Effects”. The AQR Insight Award recognises and rewards exceptional academic working papers that offer original, intelligent approaches to practical issues in the investment world. After narrowing the finalists to five papers, the authors are invited to AQR Capital Management (AQR) to present their research to senior members of the firm, who then choose the winners.

CQA Academic Paper Competition 2008 second prize was awarded to Usman Ali for his paper, “Analysts’ Use of Public Information and Profitability of their Recommendation Revisions”. The Chicago Quantitative Alliance (CQA) Annual Academic Competition is held at the annual Fall conference in September. Criteria for awards is based on both presentation quality and content of interest to practising investment professionals.

Crowell Prize 2008 third prize was awarded to Usman Ali for his paper, “Analysts’ Use of Public Information and Profitability of their Recommendation Revisions”. The Dr. Richard A. Crowell Memorial Prize Paper Competition is organised by PanAgora Asset Management and is named in honour of its founder. Papers are judged by a reading committee formed by members of the PanAgora’s Quantitative Research Group on their originality, quality of exposition and analytical rigour.
